Fun Popcorn Chemistry Project!

We bought a book called The Science Chef. Kiki loves to cook so mostly bought it for her. Plus we are huge popcorn eaters, me and the girly’s! We watch movies mostly so that goes hand in hand, right?

This will be fast!

Our experiment was to discover the difference between popcorn that was soaked in water for 1 hour and popcorn that had not been soaked.

Here is what we found out.

1. It took longer for the popcorn to start popping. We guessed this to be because there was more moisture in the popcorn to heat up to start the popping.

2. There were less unpopped kernels in the bottom of the popper.

3. The popcorn was huge. The pops were bigger and fuller.

4. It actually had a better flavor for plain popcorn. But we still buttered it up and salted it.

So we have learned if we want bigger, fuller pops, and less unpopped kernels, we need to soak our popcorn kernels before popping.
